In closing the pediatric inpatient and emergency units at Franklin Square, Medstar has shown that they care more about profit than children's health. Join us on Tuesday, May 8 at 1:30 PM to demand change.
On April 3, Medstar informed the Department of Pediatrics at the Franklin Square Medical Center that the pediatric inpatient unit would be permanently closed and that the previously separate pediatric emergency room would be combined with the adult ER. Thirty staff members and eight pediatricians lost their jobs.
Franklin Square is the only hospital in northeast Baltimore County, a geographically isolated area. Approximately 50% of pediatric patients serviced were Medicaid patients, many of whom relied on the bus line to access care. These families are now expected to travel all the way to Bayview Medical Center - 9 miles away. Among the most egregious consequences of Medstar’s actions is the closure of a program that provided specialized care for three hundred child survivors of sexual abuse each year.
Corporations like MedStar buy up hospitals monopolizing markets, increasing prices, and providing no transparency. They then eliminate historically non-profitable but vital services like pediatrics and other primary care specialties having completely lost sight of the role of physicians, converting hospitals into surgical centers with the only objective being profit. They claim non-profit status and escape taxation, while simultaneously closing down units that provide charitable care.
Come protest Medstar’s cruel for-profit administrative decisions that hurt children and communities. From families to the doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrative workers who serve them, we have had enough! Corporate greed should not stand in between doctors and patients.
